"Time travel is simple. Just look up."
-A. Potamus
People often ask if the hippopotamus is my favorite animal. It is not. The sea turtle is. But I am a time traveler and an observer of the stars. And the word hippopotamus led me to something deeper. I believe we are all connected by a great, universal River of Time and Space winding through the Cosmos. By replacing Hippo (horse) with Astro (star) and adding it to Potamus (river), I found my identity: The Astropotamus; a navigator of the Celestial Currents on the River of Space and Time.
We are all part of this flow; our atoms formed in the explosions of ancient stars. You are already in the River. Why not ride along with me and explore it?
When you look up at the night sky, you are not just seeing light; you are looking back in time. Every photon that hits your eye or camera sensor is an ancient messenger, traveling at the meager speed of light, carrying a history written thousands or millions of years ago. You travel back in time every time you look up.
This site is my logbook. It is where I document the technical rigors of astrophotography the quiet, introspective times when I look up at the night sky, and the Rituals of the Star River Podcast. I am not a master of the universe; I am a student of it. I am learning just as you are, one long exposure - and one amazing conversation - at a time.
Whether I am in the AstropotaPOD, my backyard observatory, or out in the field under dark, remote skies, I am chasing the same thing: a deeper understanding of our place in this ancient, infinite expanse.
I invite you to step into the current with me. Let's capture the past, explore the technical mysteries of the present, and find our way down the River together.
Until next time, clear skies, and I'll see you in the dark!
